Welcome to CAMP Philippines!

Please read this before you start with the application.

College Admissions Mentors for Peers (CAMP) in the Philippines is a student-run group that provides advice for young Filipinos on all aspects related to the college application process. We currently have a moderated Facebook group where students can ask questions and engage in discussion, an official website, and, its integral component, a one-one-one mentoring program where students can receive guidance from a current college student studying abroad.

This is the application for for high school students who are interested in participating in our mentoring program. You will be paired with a current college student who will help and guide you through the application process.

If you wish to participate, please complete this application honestly and to the best of your abilities. Patterned after the Common Application, the universal college application system employed by US colleges, the mentee application is designed to give you a taste of the application process that you will go through later this year. Given that the application is lengthy, the option to 'save your work' is included to assist you. Although some questions here are optional, we encourage you to answer everything truthfully and in great detail to help us help you even better!

For 2014, we will be hosting three (3) application rounds. The first round applications are due on 11:59 pm, February 15th, 2014. You will be getting your mentor assignments exactly two weeks after. The second and third round applications are due some time later this year, but it is highly encouraged that you apply as early as you possibly can.

We would like to emphasize that we have a limited number of mentors available. Your application does not guarantee a mentor, so again, the earlier you apply, the better.

CAMP Philippines will keep all your information secure and will only share relevant answers with your soon to be mentor.

Thank you for your interest in CAMP! :)

Essays and Short Takes

Think of these essays as precursors to the Common Application Personal Statements. There is one long essay (500 to 650 words) and several short takes (less than 100 words). Second to your high school transcript and SAT's, your essays are arguably among the most important components of your application because, essentially, they reveal who you are beyond your grades, accomplishments, and test scores. As such, please write these essays as personally as possible, and not like how you would write a paper for your English or History class.

As such, CAMP places a heavy emphasis on these essays. It is for this reason that for the application, we are requiring several statements from you. These essays will be crucial to the pairing process, and they will prove even more important once you start working with your mentee. Please give them a great deal of thought and answer them truthfully and to the best of your abilities. Your writing style will also reveal how you think and articulate your ideas.

We encourage you to read our section on the personal essays on our website before writing your essays for our prompts and developing multiple drafts before final submission.

The following prompts are taken from college applications, such as the Common App and the MIT Freshman Application.

Personal Essay

The essay demonstrates your ability to write clearly and concisely on a selected topic and helps you

distinguish yourself in your own voice. What do you want the readers of your application to know about you apart from courses, grades, and test scores? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay of no less than 250 words and no more than 650 words, using the prompt to inspire and structure your response.

Remember: 650 words is your limit, not your goal. Use the full range if you need it, but don't feel obligated to do so.

  1. Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
  2. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what lessons did you learn?
  3. Reflect on a time when you challenged an idea or belief. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?
  4. describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content. What do you do or experience there, and why is it meaningful to you?
  5. Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

Short Takes

Please respond to these prompts in less than 100 words.

Special Requirements

Given the nature of the (hard) work required by the application process to schools abroad, we want to make sure that you will be willing to do the work necessary to submit your applications by December 2014 (or earlier, depending on when you apply).

As such, CAMP further asks for two more requirements to get to know you better.

1). Please submit a short 2-4 minute video of you that answers this question:
               "What sets you apart?"

You may either attach the video to this form below or send us a private Youtube link.

2).  Please submit a RESUMÉ that details your achievements - academic and
extracurricular. We encourage you to search for online references on how to format and structure your         resume. Click here to enter text

We guarantee that only the CAMP Mentoring Team will view your video and resume.

Thank you very much for you time and effort! You're almost done!
